Energy Innovation Program Consultant SME

APS is looking to hire an Energy Innovation Program Consultant SME who will be the subject matter expert (SME) to provide internal technical and advisory expertise in the areas of energy storage and distributed generation technologies. The Energy Innovation program consultant provides department- and cross-department advisory services across a wide variety of distribution-connected and behind-the-meter applications and projects.

 

Major responsibilities include performing technology evaluations including customer and electrical distribution system-level technology assessments, business-case analysis, pilot project planning and implementation, in-field evaluation and technical reporting, program management, market-level cost and performance trend analysis, and development of formal, written evaluation reports. Develops and maintains technical expertise on distribution- and transmission-level technologies as well as distributed generation and may be called on to act as lead to implement major projects and programs, coordinating and managing activities across multiple business units to extract the highest value. Develops relationships with key stakeholders both internally and externally. Reports to management on program status and provides advice on issues and opportunities.

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, finance or business, plus at least 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Master’s degree preferred with emphasis in either chemistry or electrical engineering.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. In-depth knowledge of energy issues, technologies, markets, the electric utility industry, and relevant state and federal requirements.
  • Excellent business, planning and project management skills.
  • Preferred technology experience, in order of priority, includes but is not limited to: lithium-ion, standby diesel gen-sets, solar generation, and demand response technologies.

 

Major Accountabilities:         

 

  • Lead technology assessments as required to investigate new distribution-level and/or customer technologies from a technical- and business-case perspective. Make recommendations on which programs to pursue and why.
  • In cooperation with lead project managers, develop and implement project work plans and secure buyoff and approval from cooperating departments. Regularly revise work plans to reflect current conditions and update as appropriate.
  • Interface directly and professionally with internal and external APS customers.
  • Implement key success indicator tracking and reporting. Develop and maintain tools for reporting progress made. Revise tracking mechanisms as appropriate.
  • Co-develop and manage training interface and coordination.
  • Effectively interface and resolve project issues with departmental staff, other departments, executive management, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to meet project requirements.
  • Through continuous learning, stay abreast of trends (technical, market, regulatory and political) and utilize this knowledge in order to maximize corporate benefits and minimize negative impacts.
  • Demonstrate a high individual level of analytical and technical capabilities and expertise on current technical and policy Energy Innovation issues, maintain technical expertise regarding Energy Innovation technologies.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key local and state Energy Innovation stakeholders.
  • Participate, as Company representative in various forums, committees and working groups dealing with Energy Innovation technical, policy and regulatory issues.

 

Energy Innovation Program Consultant

APS is looking to hire an Energy Innovation Program Consultant who will be a senior-level investigator / implementer of advanced grid technologies. Near-term (next 18 months) projects include project management and implementation of up to ten (10) 200 kW / 400 kWh lithium-ion battery storage units in APS’s distribution system and the installation of a larger 2 MW / 8 MWH lithium-ion units in a distribution-deferment project.    

 

Other responsibilities include developing and managing key Energy Innovation initiatives, including customer and electrical distribution system-level technology assessments, business-case analysis, pilot project planning and implementation, in-field evaluation and technical reporting, program management, and market-level cost and performance trend analysis. Develops and maintains technical expertise on distribution- and transmission-level technologies as well as distributed generation (esp. solar, storage, and other DER) and may be called on to act as lead on major projects and programs, coordinating and managing activities across multiple business units to extract the highest value. Develops relationships with key stakeholders both internally and externally. Reports to management on program status and provides advice on issues and opportunities.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, Finance or Business, plus at least 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Electrical Engineering degree with utility distribution system’s experience preferred. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
