WHO WE ARE

Founded in 2004, Build Change is a non‐profit social enterprise whose mission is to save lives in earthquakes and hurricanes. Build Change designs disaster-resistant houses and schools, trains homeowners, builders, engineers and government officials to build them, works with governments to develop and implement building standards, partners with the private sector to improve building materials quality and create jobs, and facilitates access to incentive-based capital for reconstruction and retrofitting by partnering with financing institutions and government subsidy programs.

For more information about Build Change and its programs in Haiti, Colombia, Guatemala, Philippines, Indonesia and Nepal, visit www.buildchange.org.

YOUR NEW OPPORTUNITY

As Engineering Program Associate, you will be a key supplement to the Build Change Engineering Program by providing expertise, mentorship and quality assurance to programs and projects globally. You will be able to work directly with the engineering teams which are composed of national and international staff, travel to program offices and new project locations, and apply your experience and knowledge in structural engineering to new contexts and systems which may not already have well-established standards. You will be able to support multiple facets of Build Change’s work: mitigation and reduction of risk from the next disaster through optimizing solutions for proactive retrofitting of housing and schools at scale; ensuring communities are empowered to reconstruct to disaster-resistant standards through developing and teaching cost-effective, locally appropriate, and clear guidelines for design and construction of houses and schools; and helping to make solutions permanent and sustainable by working with local professionals and governments to institutionalize them.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will provide punctual engineering expertise and support to projects, typically while working on location. (While working on location in a country program, you will also report to the local program director and be required to adhere to local safety and security policies and procedures.) You may occasionally serve as temporary senior engineering staff to programs. You may also provide engineering services to projects falling outside of existing country programs when they arise. You will help improve Engineering Program knowledge and resource development and sharing across country programs.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE

You presently hold:

• a completed university degree in a civil or structural engineering discipline from an accredited college or university, emphasis on earthquake engineering a plus

• a Professional or Structural Engineering license (or equivalent) in civil (structural) engineering

• a valid passport

Your experiences include:

• a minimum of 6 years professional experience in structural engineering in a country with well-established building code adoption and enforcement. Additional experience in designing and supervising construction of disaster-resistant buildings in a developing country is a very strong plus.

• work in earthquake- and wind-resistant design and construction of confined masonry, reinforced masonry, RC frame, and timber buildings.

• engineering work in existing building seismic and structural evaluation and retrofit according to recognized standards, such as ASCE 41. Experience in performance-based design is a plus.

• using international building codes and guidelines, including the IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 41, etc.

You are able to:

• work successfully in a team environment, as well as manage a team of technical staff, and deliver outcomes on time.

• communicate clearly and concisely, taking cultural norms into account, verbally and in writing.

• execute with proficiency AutoCAD and structural design software. (Revit and Robot proficiency is a plus.)

You would describe yourself as:

• drama-free, optimistic, flexible, humble, patient, no ego, and having a good sense of humor

• proactive, self-motivated, able to work independently or remotely

• fluent in English

You are excited by the opportunity to:

• work on location for up to three months at a time, sometimes in a post-disaster setting, within Latin America, the Caribbean, and South/Southeast Asia

• learn and understand different cultures and program contexts

• work in a collaborative and diverse environment

And maybe you have done the following:

• hands-on construction in masonry, reinforced concrete, and/or carpentry

• mastered an additional language, such as French, Spanish, Tagalog, Nepali, Bahasa Indonesia

• worked previously in international development
