Reentry Systems Engineer

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC, is seeking a Reentry Systems Engineer. Job Summary: Actively participate in trade studies, performance assessments, and design of Navy / Air Force strategic reentry systems and other hypersonic systems. Duties: Engineering analysis, design, and performance of reentry bodies (35%) Perform trade studies on various reentry systems (25%) Reentry systems integration and interface analysis (15%) Evaluation of flight test telemetry to determine missile and/or reentry body performance (15%) Document and present analysis findings as appropriate and interact with sponsors and representatives of other agencies. Required Qualifications: BS in engineering or other related technical discipline Working knowledge of key reentry subject areas such as aerodynamic performance, flight dynamics, and/or subsystem performance Strong computer background and programming skills, including MATLAB Must be able to interact effectively with individuals of different experience levels and backgrounds including external industry and military personnel Strong communication skills both verbal and written are required Initiative, interest in skill development and the flexibility to accept assignments of varied scope and skill Active Secret or higher level clearance Desired Qualifications: MS in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical engineering with 3 or more years experience specific to reentry systems or subsystems Previous experience with Navy and/or Air Force strategic reentry systems Strong background in some or all of the following categories: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, aerodynamics, structural dynamics, and interface performance requirements Design experience for related missile and reentry body subsystems Previous experience with MATLAB Simulink Special Working Conditions: Some travel required for meetings and field tests (approx. 20-25 days per year). Security: Top Secret Clearance is required to perform essential functions of the position.
